Discover how folds, light and shadow give fabric its form.
Saturday 28 November 2026 · 17:00–19:30
From soft drapes to sharp creases, fabric offers a chance to practise observation and shading. This workshop explores how cloth hangs, gathers and folds, helping you make sense of what can initially look like a complicated arrangement.
Through guided drawing exercises, you’ll learn to identify the main shapes before building up smaller details. You’ll explore how light and shadow describe the direction, depth and weight of folds, making fabric feel more convincing on the page.
Whether you’re new to drawing or would like to develop skills for still life and figure drawing, this session will help you approach fabric with greater confidence.
What you’ll explore:
How folds form: Observe how support, tension and gravity affect the way fabric falls.
Finding the main shapes: Simplify an arrangement before adding detail.
Light and shadow: Use tonal values to describe folds, creases and overlapping cloth.
Edges and transitions: Explore where gradual shading or a sharper line best describes the fabric.
Surface and weight: Notice how different fabrics hang and respond to light.
Take time to look closely and discover how a few carefully observed shapes and shadows can bring fabric to life.
Want to take it further? Look out for a follow-up workshop where we’ll paint fabric and folds in oils, building on these drawing foundations to explore colour, texture and the play of light on cloth.
Please note: your booking is confirmed once payment is completed. The order status will remain Pending until after the workshop, when it is manually marked as fulfilled.
