Course Program
Lesson 1
Seeing and Drawing the Basics
Start with a pre-instruction drawing—a valuable way to track your progress.
Learn to "see" like an artist: switch off the left brain and turn on the right.
Master volume drawing with chiaroscuro tonal zones as you build and hatch basic geometric shapes: a cylinder, a ball, and a cube.
Create a viewfinder to help place and frame objects, then apply your skills in a guided still life drawing.
Lesson 2
Negative Space
Negative Space Observation – Train your eye to see the spaces around and between objects rather than the objects themselves.
Negative Space Drawing Exercise – Choose a simple subject (e.g., a plant, a stool, or a stack of books) and draw only the empty spaces around it.
Applying Negative Space in Composition – Explore how artists use negative space to create balance, depth, and visual interest in their work.
Lesson 3
Drawing Fabric, Ribbons and Flow
Learn to simplify folds into clear structural forms before adding detail.
Understand the different types of folds, including hanging, stretched, and compressed fabric.
Draw flowing ribbons to develop confidence with rhythm, movement, and line quality.
Apply light and shadow to create convincing volume in fabric.
Complete a finished drawing of draped cloth and flowing material.
Lesson 4
Space, Perspective and Landscapes
Warm up your observation skills with exercises such as upside-down drawing.
Learn to create the illusion of depth through perspective and spatial relationships.
Explore the fundamentals of one-point perspective to construct believable spaces.
Create a landscape using mark-making techniques, aerial perspective, and a bridge as the focal point.
Lesson 5
Portrait Drawing
Learn the fundamental proportions and construction of the head.
Explore facial features, light and shadow, and creating a convincing likeness.
Build the confidence needed to draw portraits accurately from observation.
Lesson 6
Speed Sketching
Develop confidence through a series of timed observational sketching exercises.
Learn to identify the most important shapes, proportions, gestures, and values without getting lost in details.
Discover how speed sketching improves observation, accuracy, and drawing confidence.
Experiment with different subjects and sketching times to capture the essence of what you see.
Finish the course by comparing your first drawing with your most recent work and reflecting on how much your observation and drawing skills have developed.
