Course Program

Week 1: Exploring Art & Your Intentions

Begin by looking at different types of art and ways artists communicate ideas, emotions and experiences. Through discussion and creative exploration, you’ll start considering what you would like to express in your own work.

You’ll explore:

  • Different approaches to making art and creating meaning

  • Sources of inspiration, from personal experiences to subjects that interest you

  • Your intentions for making a piece

Between classes: You’ll have some homework to help you explore your intentions and gather ideas or references for the following week.

Week 2: Finding Your Direction

Bring your research and reflections into the studio. With individual guidance, you’ll narrow down what you would like to make and consider how to give your idea a visual form.

You’ll explore:

  • Choosing a focus for your artwork

  • Selecting images, materials and an approach that support your intention

  • Developing initial sketches or visual experiments as your idea takes shape

Week 3: Making Your Artwork

This session gives you time to become more involved in making your piece. As you work, you’ll receive guidance on both practical decisions and the connection between your concept and its visual expression.

You’ll explore:

  • Developing your artwork from your sketches and experiments

  • Working with your chosen materials and techniques

  • Adapting your approach as the piece evolves

Week 4: Reviewing & Refining

Take a fresh look at your artwork and consider what it still needs. This final session focuses on making changes, resolving details and identifying any further work needed.

You’ll explore:

  • Reviewing how your artwork communicates your intention

  • Making final adjustments to the piece

  • Deciding when the work feels resolved, or how to continue developing it

Making Time Between Classes

You’ll get more out of the course if you spend a little time on your project during the week, whether that means researching, sketching or continuing the artwork itself.

The scale and pace of each project will be different. If you need more studio time or guidance, you’re welcome to book a place at Art Class with Alvira, held on Friday evenings most weeks, to continue working on your piece.
