Course Description

Step beyond the fundamentals and develop greater confidence, expression, and technical control in oil painting. Over six weeks, you’ll explore how to deepen compositions with underpainting, build textures, harmonize colour, and place figures within complex environments.

This course is ideal for artists who already have some oil experience and want to move from foundational practice toward more ambitious, expressive work that shows technical control and personal voice.

Course Description

Lesson 1 – Foundations in Underpainting & Value Structure

·         • Warm-up exercises in tonal observation

·         • Create a monochrome or limited-palette underpainting to map out values

·         • Discussion: how underpainting influences final layers

Lesson 2 – Colour Harmony & Surface Interaction

·         • Develop a refined palette (complementary / analogous strategies)

·         • Paint small studies of different surfaces (glass, wood, metal) to observe how light shifts hue & saturation

·         • Exercises in colour unification

 

Lesson 3

Lesson 3 – Fabric, Folds & Texture

·         • Study drapery: gravity, fold logic, cast shadows

·         • Apply glazing, scumbling, and impasto to create believable textures

·         • Experiment with brush direction and edge control

 

Lesson 4

Lesson 4 – Interior Composition & Spatial Depth

·         • Sketch and plan an interior scene integrating multiple textures

·         • Introduce perspective and atmospheric depth

·         • Start block-in of the interior painting

Lesson 5 – The Human Figure in Context

·         • Gesture drawing and proportion review

·       • Block in figure within your interior

·         • Refine light and shadow transitions on skin, clothing, and surroundings

Lesson 6

Make it stand out

Lesson 6 – Final Project & Artist Voice

·         • Complete and refine your painting

·         • Use glazing, edge control, and colour adjustments for cohesion

·         • Group critique, reflections, and next steps
