Curious about oil painting but unsure where to start? This introductory workshop will help you get familiar with the materials and explore how oil paint feels, mixes and moves on the surface.
Through guided exercises, you’ll practise mixing colours, handling your brush and applying paint. You’ll discover how the slower drying time allows you to blend, adjust and rework areas as you go.
The focus is on understanding the medium and experimenting, giving you a practical foundation for further painting.
What you’ll explore:
Getting to know your materials: An introduction to oil paints, brushes, painting surfaces and mediums.
Colour mixing: Practise creating colours and adjusting their value and temperature.
Paint consistency: Explore how the handling of paint affects your brushstrokes.
Applying and blending: Experiment with making marks, laying down colour and softening transitions.
Working with oils: Learn basic principles for building a painting, caring for your brushes and cleaning up.
Whether you’re completely new to painting or trying oils for the first time, come ready to experiment and enjoy your first brushstrokes.
