Lesson 1

 

Week 1: Structure & Proportions of the Face

Proportions of the Face

We begin by building a strong foundation—learning to draw the human head from observation with correct proportions.

In this session:
• Sketching from front and side views
• Understanding the skull and face planes
• Basic proportion systems
• Gesture and structure exercises

 

Lesson 2

 

Week 2: Features & Expression

Now that you know the structure, we explore individual features and how they shift to express emotion and personality.

In this session:
• Drawing eyes, noses, mouths, and ears
• Creating expressive variations
• Understanding facial muscles and emotion
• Bringing life and mood into sketches

 

Lesson 3

 

Week 3: Oil Painting Foundations

Transition into painting with oils. Begin your portrait by building form and blocking in colour using your drawing as a guide.

In this session:
• Materials and tools for oil painting
• Preparing your surface and sketch transfer
• Blocking in major shapes and skin tone mapping
• Understanding light, colour temperature, and volume

 

Lesson 4

 

Week 4: Refinement & Finishing the Oil Portrait

Bring your oil portrait to completion with guided support. Focus on refining likeness, colour harmony, and final details.

• Adding depth and contrast
• Fine-tuning facial features and likeness
• Final highlights and expressive brushwork
